Sunland’s students at the I Novaschool Oratory and Debate Tournament

Last weekend a group of Secondary students from our British school Novaschool Sunland International participated in the first oratory and debate tournament organised by the Novaschool Educational Group at the facilities of Novaschool Añoreta, in Rincón de la Victoria.

The previously classified participants have come from the six Novaschool centres to celebrate this event on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 April. The tournament is the culmination of the ‘Novaschool Comunica’ project that has been launched this 2023-2024 school year, aimed at students from Year 6 to Year 13.

‘Novaschool Comunica’ is an ambitious didactic plan for training in public speaking and debate that aims to promote the use of communication tools in the classroom. The project is included in the Language and Literature sessions, and aims to cultivate oratory and debate skills by promoting eloquent expression, active listening, critical thinking and teamwork.

Encouraging oratory and debate in the educational project from an early age teaches students to communicate effectively, helping them in their academic, personal and social evolution. Class discussions foster the ability to understand and explain concepts with greater ease and depth, working on eloquence and rhetoric critically according to logic and reasoning, active listening and teamwork.

The event took place over two days: on Friday after the opening ceremony, there were 2 oratory tests and 2 rounds of debate. Throughout Saturday, the 3rd test was held to go to the semi-finals and then reach the final. Our Y13 students have placed third in Group Level Debate. In addition, we had two individual winners: Jingru (Y10) received the diploma for the best introducer and Martín (Y13) as the best speaker won a oratory course as a prize.

Congratulations to everyone!
