Cártama, 11 de marzo de 2014. Los alumnos de Yr 4 han estado aprendiendo sobre calor y temperatura en clase de ciencias. Como parte de esta unidad, han estado observando cómo se expande el líquido dentro de los termómetros para mostrar la temperatura. Las dos clases de Year 4 tuvieron la oportunidad, por primera vez en sus vidas, de ir a un auténtico laboratorio de ciencias a realizar un experimento…construir su propio termómetro. Los alumnos fueron cuidadosamente guiados por Mr Kennedy, Miss Sinead y Mr Devine (profesor de ciencias de Secundaria) para mezclar agua, alcohol isopropílico y colorante, y elaborar un líquido de color que se expande cuando se calienta. Dicho líquido fue introducido en una botella de plástico con una pajita y se sellado con plastilina.
Después llegó el momento de la verdad, los alumnos, por turnos, colocaron sus termómetros dentro de una olla de agua caliente para observar que ocurría con el líquido al aumentar su temperatura. Algunos termómetros funcionaron mejor que otros, pero en la mayoría de los casos el líquido consiguió levantar la pajita al subir al calentarse.

Galería de fotosCártama, 11th March 2014. Year 4 have been learning about heat and temperature in Science class. As part of this unit they have been looking at how the liquid inside thermometers expand to show the temperature. Both Year 4 classes had the opportunity to go to the Science Lab for the first time in their lives to carry out an experiment. In fact, the experiment involved them making their own thermometers! Students were carefully guided by Mr. James, Miss Sinead and Mr. Devine (the school´s Secondary Science teacher) to mix wáter, rubbing alcohol and food colouring to create a colourful liquid which expanded when heated. This liquid was placed inside a bottle with a straw and which was sealed with plasticine. Then came the moment of truth! Students took turns to place their thermometer inside a pot of hot water to see what happened to the liquid. Some worked better than others but in most cases the liquid rose up the straw as it got hotter. You can see the results in the photos!
