CIEDES Foundation’s workshop on the SDGs at Novaschool Sunland

Last Friday, March 11, Year 10 students had the opportunity to work on the Sustainable Development Goals with Laura Robles, the head of projects in Malaga for CIEDES Foundation.

The students learned how the UN promotes the 17 SDGs and were able to classify them by discussing it in teams. It was a very interesting workshop where they put into practice what they are learning now in Social Sciences; they also understood that they are the future.

Based on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, from Novaschool Sunland International we work with special attention on the development of competencies for the SDGs implementation, in order to commit and motivate all stakeholders to participate actively.

Our main goal is to inform, sensitise and engage students, teachers and other social agents of the educational community, so that they know all the 17 SDGs, how they impact our lives and what we can do every day to achieve them.

Through different activities that we carry out in our British centre, students know and reflect on the SDGs, analyse and identify challenges and needs and proposing ideas to solve them. We carry out different projects in which students design actions that lead them to act in the environment with the intention of improving it.

We are aware that we operate within the education sector and, therefore, our greatest commitment is in accordance with SDG number 4. However, we also put our efforts towards other SDGs that we consider to have a coherent and objective purpose with our activity.

At Novaschool Sunland, as an educational center of the Novaschool Group, we are carrying out the integration into our educational model of the ‘smart’ concept through the development of experiences that value the concept of “smartcity”, but to the scale of a school.

Smart School Project

Based on the “Smart School” concept and the 17 SDGs established by the United Nations, we set the following objectives as part of the project we are developing:

  • Transform the school into a smart centre, which uses technological innovation as the basis on which to sustain a change that allows it to meet the new needs of all stakeholders, sustainable development and the efficient management of its resources.
  • Integrate the “Smart” concept into our educational model, in order to serve as a lever and engine of change in the challenge of sustainable development and efficient management

To achieve the goals set within the Smart School Project, we follow 4 strategic lines of action:

  1. Optimisation of operations and processes.
  2. Teaching and quality innovation.
  3. Efficient and intelligent management of facilities, goods and equipment.
  4. Resource management focused on sustainability.

Below, we collect all the actions carried out during the last year:

  • Installation of a photovoltaic plant
  • Installation of a wastewater treatment plant and recycling of water for irrigation use
  • Start-up of an Agro-sustainable Farm

Novaschool Sunland International, a sustainable school

Novaschool Sunland is described as a sustainable school and for this purpose practices are always carried out focused on minimising any environmental impact that derives from the actions that are carried out:

  • Establish specific environmental requirements for suppliers
  • Implemented waste plan
  • Improve the efficiency of energy consumption by implementing photovoltaic solar panels
  • Awareness and training of both students and teachers on environmental care
  • Hire local suppliers, in order to reduce pollution from transport and minimise CO2 emissions
