Learning outside the classroom

Cártama, 22th April 2013.The British government and the Education Secretary Michael Gove are actively promoting learning outside the classroom. Learning inside a classroom is a tried and tested method of organising schooling. However, teachers and learners have always valued the additional opportunities for learning provided by a range of activities conducted outside the classroom.

Here in Novaschool Sunland we include:

1. activities within the school’s own building and grounds or the immediate area around the school.
2. participation in dramatic productions, concerts and other special events
3. involvement in clubs, musical groups and sporting activities held during break-times and lunch times.
4. educational visits organised within the school day
5. residential visits that take place during the school week, a weekend or holiday.
When going out on these outings Novaschool Sunland follows the following guidelines:
6. we ensure that the curriculum planning includes sufficient well-structured opportunities for all learners to engage in learning outside the classroom as a key, integrated element of their experience. Many visits cover more than one subject in the National Curriculum.
7. we evaluate the quality of learning outside the classroom to ensure that it has maximum impact on learners’ achievement, personal development and well-being
8. we ensure equal and full access for all learners to learning outside the classroom by monitoring participation in activities by different groups of learners and removing any barriers.

‘Primaries look for a good experience. Secondaries fit it more to their scheme of work.’

The first-hand experiences of learning outside the classroom helps to make subjects more vivid and interesting for pupils and enhance their learning bringing extra depth to pupils’ learning and experience understanding. It can also contribute significantly to pupils’ personal, social and emotional development.

‘The classroom is just a room at the end of the day. You don’t have to have the lesson there.’ Learning outside the classroom Ofsted 2009.

Some experiences give opportunities to work together towards shared aims and to develop skills such as leadership, teamwork and effective communication. Learning outside the classroom can also help to combat under-achievement, as illustrated in the following example.

‘The history trip to Belgium affected me emotionally. My writing improved because I could empathise with how the soldiers felt in the trenches.’ (Secondary pupil) Learning outside the classroom Ofsted 2009.

At Novaschool Sunland it is our belief that this approach to schooling and a rounded education is what sets us apart from other schooling institutions and offers our students the best possible balanced education.
